Spy in the sky

Would you like to travel back in time to Europe during the First World War? World War 1 Tales by Terry Deary tells us about an eighteen-year-old boy's experiences of the First World War. The story is in epistolary form, which means it is written in the form of letters.

The main character in the novel is Alfred Adams who joins the war as an air observer and takes pictures of the battle-front from an aeroplane. He is a spy for the British government who lands across enemy lines. Alfred writes letters to his sister Lucy about the war situation as he witnesses it from above.

But Alfred's adventures in the sky end abruptly when he is captured by the enemy. This forms the climax of the plot. The reader is kept in suspense wondering whether Alfred will be able to escape.

The novel takes the reader on a journey to France at the height of the First World War. It also provides an insight into espionage and spying. The novel gives readers a lesson in history about the events which took place during World War 1.
