Airmen stun defending champs Kandy to win after 33 years

Air Force SC created the biggest upset of the on going Dialog ‘A’ division rugby season when they beat defending league champions Kandy SC by 24 points (3 goals, 1 penalty) to 21 (3 goals) in their inter-club league match played at Air Force grounds Ratmalana yesterday.

The Airmen completely outplayed the league champs in all departments of the contest as Kandy SC failed to impress with the cream and the best of players in their ranks.

Air Force drew first blood and there after almost everything went in their favour to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first half.

Rumesh Ramanathan (2 tries) and Lahiru Udayanga scored the tries for the Airmen. Charith Senaratne did all the kicking. For Kandy SC the tries came from Danushka Dayan, Sashika Jayawardene and substitute Fazil Marija.

The conversions were made by Arshad Jamaldeen, Kanchana Ramanayake and Thilina Wijesinghe.
