The Department of Registration of Persons will open a special counter tomorrow to issue identity cards swiftly to students sitting for the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination on Tuesday. “The students need not come personally. Parents or teachers can come there to apply and collect the identity cards on their behalf,” he said.

Due to the heavy traffic of applications the department was kept opened yesterday and had received nearly 150 applications for the one day service and there were other pending applications were also issued yesterday. Altogether a total of 225 applications were approved and identity cards had been issued.

He said that the public was not aware that yesterday was a working day and not many applications had come through, therefore, the department had decided to continue with the special counter designated for students for tomorrow as well. .

Elaborating on the documents that should be brought compulsorily where parents or teachers would bring the applications on behalf of the students he said, “I would recommend teachers/guardians and parents to bring a letter of request signed by the applicant. This could be used to scan the signature of the applicant for use. As long as the signature and the photograph are available the students need not come.”

“Even for pending applications parents are allowed to bring a fresh request letter signed by the student along with a photograph they will be entertained,”Ratnayake said.
