Women: Mentoring important to groom leaders

15 January, 2017

The importance of mentoring as part of an organisational framework to support women in the workplace was highlighted at ‘Ignite’, the mentoring program organized by the Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) Sri Lanka.

Women need a lot of support to excel in the corporate world in the face of the many emotional issues they may face in their daily lives, said Chiranthi Cooray, Chief Human Resource Officer of Hatton National Bank, the keynote speaker.

“Organizations should come up with suitable policies and frameworks to support women in general. Mentoring can be an essential part of this support framework,” she said.

“Mentoring is essential for not only women but also for male leaders as it enables one to shape and fast-track their careers. Indeed, the ultimate outcome of a mentoring initiative should be a fruitful and rewarding experience for both mentor and mentee,” said Cooray a recipient of the Global HR Excellence HR Leadership Award by the World HRD Congress.

Ignite aims to develop and support young professionals and undergraduates to harness their potential by providing learning and development opportunities and one-on-one engagement with experienced mentors from the industry.
