Mutual respect through self-dignity

26 March, 2017

Your blissful birth and peaceful death are the outcome of mutual respect granted first, from father towards mother and the foetus, and afterwards, how you respect others while you live in this world. Earning self-gratitude through mutual respect is vital for survival, as we cannot live in isolation.

Mutual respect refers to the sense of worth of a person, a personal quality or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality, as well as, the due action of courtesy in deference to a right or privilege held by different individuals or communities.

Good deeds such as, sincerity, loyalty, intelligence, mutual understanding and warmheartedness motivate to inculcate this aspect within oneself through self-discipline. Unless you have cultivated morals within yourself, you will not be able to respect another since you are not ready to respect even yourself.

It is evident, if we look at the present society, many don’t care for themselves irrespective of respecting others. This may be a result of improper education, unsuitable media, including cartoons, films and especially, inappropriate websites.

All this has created an image which is a desperate illusion advocating alcohol, smoking, illegitimate romance, as part of modern living and a craving for sexuality as a basic need of man. With these perspectives, youngsters as well as adults lead a miserable life, being addicted to the above social demerits and the misuse of technological advancements which inhibit their physical, mental, social as well as spiritual wellbeing, thus resulting in suicides, drug addiction and certain mental disorders. So, firstly, the utmost responsibility is to take measures to desist from these disgraceful practices so that individuals could save their lives for the betterment of their future.

Apart from such malpractices, today, man has lost sympathy, and lost his soul to realize the benevolence and benign causes in his conduct. He has lost the sight to see the unadulterated virgin as little girls or as loving daughters. He has lost his compassion to honour the personality or dignity of others. He has lost his memory of how he was brought up by his parents, undergoing inexplicable pains.

Brutality and savage has won over him that he doesn’t see his companion any longer, as a fellow human being, but as an enemy for whom he would not sacrifice and from whom he would try to benefit, despite any misery that the other would undergo. He has lost his power of reasoning for being satisfied by the uncomfortable state of the other.

As a result, murderers are everywhere who kill people without remorse. The most recent murder that we heard was the death of the underworld criminals, and it was reported that the civilians celebrated their death in high spirits for the relief they got perhaps, because of losing an individual who was a threat to society.

But, if we look at it from a wider angle he is also a human who has equal rights as the other. But for his misfortune he has had to be such a savage. Nevertheless, celebrating the death of a human is not an act of a human being who should have mutual respect for the other, as he is aware that his actions would boomerang upon himself, as is taught in every religion.

The latest trend in social media has become the editing of different personalities. Though it is meant to generate humour for one party, the relevant individuals tend to lose their dignity.

They have undervalued the other individual, thus, going against mutual respect. Some people quarrel in public, berate others and spread false information. At present, the rate of women and child abuse is high. These are a result of losing the aspiration of mutual respect.

Mutual respect is an essential quality that should be promoted in the family, school and society. Finally, friendships and relationships should be based on mutual respect, honesty and understanding, concepts that many modern liberals should consider revisiting.
