Special commission to probe missing persons

21 May, 2017

President Maithripala Sirisena says the Government will take steps to investigate claims of missing persons being held in captivity if that is backed by evidence.

The President made these comments yesterday addressing a gathering in Sampur to vest the newly built Sampur District Hospital with the people. He said after reflecting on previous commissions and its reports on missing persons, a special commission will be set up to look into complaints of missing persons in the near future.

Referring to social media reports that were circulating a few weeks ago, which referred to a picture of the President taken with students of Hindu College, he said that they were mere acts of extremists backed by political interests. The President reiterated the importance of appreciating the independence that was achieved and said that people should work bearing this in mind and called on the people to gather together to defeat acts of extremists.

Speaking on the development in the North and the South, he said the government will ensure that both ends of the country were developed at the same momentum.

The President’s tour in the Sampur included opening a cultural centre in the

city, which cost Rs. 22 million, and a bridge that was built over the Lankapatuna lagoon.

The government by now has built most of the infrastructure, housing, health facilities, water and electricity in the Sampur area.

Opposition leader R. Sampanthan, Ministers Lakshman Kiriella, Faizer Musthapha, Dilan Perera, Eastern Province Governor Austin Fernando, Chief Minister Nazeer Ahamed and many others were present.
