Will help better enforce road rules : Traffic police to receive modern breathalyzer machines

Fifty hand-held breathalyzer machines will be distributed to Traffic Police divisions across the country. A ceremony in this connection will be held at the Police Criminal Records Division today where IGP Pujith Jayasundara will be the chief guest.

The newly obtained handheld machines will be a first for the Sri Lanka Police, which until recently, depended solely on disposable breathalyzer tests to detect drunk driving. According to DIG Traffic administration and road safety, Palitha Fernando, the new hand-held breathalyzer machines were obtained to boost drunk driving detections islandwide.

The new breathalyzer machines are expected to provide the Police with undisputable evidence due to its high accuracy. It also has many modern functions such as GPS, photo capture facilities and other updated functions with recovery time between tests being a mere 30 seconds.

According to DIG Fernando, the machine could store around over 32,000 test results which will help the Police in the storage of evidence.

¨We hope to obtain more hand-held breathalyzer machines of this type, in the future to upgrade our activities,¨ he said, adding, with these modernized equipment, the Police will ensure better enforcement of road and motor traffic laws in Sri Lanka.
