The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka in celebrating its 60th anniversary turns the spotlight on The Junior Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka at the Young Musicians in Concert which will be staged on Saturday July 1 at the Ladies College Hall at 7 p.m.

The Junior Symphony Orchestra will perform the Jig from Holst’s St.Paul’s Suite. The Orchestra will also perform a set of Romanian Dances by Bela Bartok popular Divertimento in D Major before they join SOSL for the rest of the concert. The SOSL’s program for the concert will commence with the Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen’s Festival Polaunaise Opus 12. The brassy pomp and pageantry of the main theme formed the ideal backdrop for the premiere attended by King Oscar II of Norway and Sweden, a few weeks after his coronation, while the balletic nuances at the end, has a tinge of Tchaikovsky.

The SOSL’s program will also include a work by Felix Mendelssohn, the Symphony No 4 in A Major Opus 90, Jean Sibelins’ Valse Triste and in sharp contrast the explosive score of the opening credits of Stars Wars – a score that won multiple Academy, Golden Globe, Grammy and British Academy Film Awards.
