Legislation to compensate victims of war

A Bill of Reparation, to put in place laws to compensate the victims of war is expected to be presented in parliament by the Government shortly, a senior official told the Sunday Observer yesterday.

After signing the Office of Missing Persons Act on Thursday, President Maithripala Sirisena has said the next step would be drafting of laws to make way for reparation, he said.

The official said the Bill would be ready within the next two to four months.

Under the resolution 30/1 titled, Promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka which was adopted.without a vote at the UN Human Rights Council in 2015, the government under took to establish a commission for truth, justice, reconciliation and non recurrence, as well as an office of missing persons and an office for reparations.
