Kariyawasam Foreign Secretary from Aug 15

Prasad Kariyawasam will assume duties as Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 15.

His predecessor Esela Weerakoon is expected to assume office as the Secretary to the Tourism Promotion and Christian Affairs Ministry.

President Maithripala Sirisena shuffled key officials without giving any reasons and the announcement of the new appointment was released by the President’s media on July 29.

Kariyawasam was serving as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the United States, since June 2014 at the time of his appointment.

A senior career diplomat, Kariyawasam, joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service in 1981 and served in many postings including Geneva, New York and Riyadh, and served as the High Commissioner to India before being posted to Washington.
