Program to nab errant drivers in Colombo

24 September, 2017

A program to nab errant drivers in Colombo was launched by the Police yesterday under the guidance of IGP Pujith Jayasundara.

According to the Police, the program will be held for several weeks to reduce the rising number of traffic and road rule violations.

“Officers in civil, travelling in unmarked vehicles will monitor motorists while looking out for errant drivers,” Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said, adding that the special teams will cover several key locations in Colombo.

According to the Police, the surveillance teams will inform traffic police officers on duty regarding motorists violating the law, who, in turn, will take action against the drivers.

The first trial phase of this project was launched in March this year to catch rule breakers unawares. The unmarked cars were provided to the police through a public-private partnership which at the initial stage had 10 cars with 20 police officers being assigned to them. Police say the main aim of the project is to identify the many traffic offences being committed by drivers which may go unnoticed by officers on duty.
