The Mercantile Football Association’s 38th Annual Seven-a-side football Championship was held over the week end at the Race Course grounds, Reid Avenue recently.
Expolanka Soccerite clinched the Mercatile Cup Championship organized by the Mercantile Football Association beating JKH five goals to nil. In the semi final Expolanak defeated LB Finance 1-0 while the the other finalist JKH beat Commercial Bank 3-0 to enter the final. Though JKH did well in the semi final they failed to live up to expectations in the final losing to Expolanka with a big margin 5-0.
The final of the Bowl category Commercial Leasing & Finance became the Champions beating the much fancied Ceylinco Insurance 1 goal to nil. The winner of this in the semi final defeated Commercial Bank to reach the final while Ceylinco overcame Commercial Credit on a penalty shootout 5-4 after the game ended in a one all draw.
The plate final between HNB ‘A’ and SriLankan Airlines saw the HNB come on top to beat their opponents 2-1. Here too HNB entered the final defeating Dialog on a penalty shootout when the game ended in a 1-1. The penalty shootout was won by HNB 5-4. Sri Lankan Airlines had a comfortable win in the semifinal when they trounced Sri Lanka Telecom 5-0.
