Demanding the release of Tamil political prisoners: Protests in Vavuniya from tomorrow

8 October, 2017

Civil society organisations and several people’s organisations of Vavuniya will stage a series of protests from tomorrow demanding the release of all Tamil political prisoners in detention .

The organisations met at the Vavuniya TNA parliamentarian Sivasakthy Anandan’s office last Friday and decided to stage their protest demonstrations, in the wake of the deteriorating condition of one of the three prisoners who is on a fast-unto-death protest at the Anuradhapura prison.

The three Tamil prisoners in detention under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) at the Anuradhapura prison commenced their fast-unto-death in protest against their indefinite detention and the transfer of their cases from the Vavuniya High Court to the Anuradhapura High Court.

The condition of one of the them is reported to be precarious.

Tomorrow’s protest will be staged near the Vavuniya main bus terminal at 10 a.m., according to reports. The protesting organisations, which include civil society and human rights organisations, political groups and people’s organisations, will continue their protests indefinitely, demanding the release of the prisoners, expeditious disposal of the cases against them and protesting against the cases being transferred to a Court in the South.
