Unsuccessful heart transplant : Sachini’s parents to file HR petition

8 October, 2017

The parents of Sri Lanka’s second heart transplant recipient, Sachini Sewwandi are to file a Human Rights petition against the Kandy Teaching Hospital Authorities.

While Sachini passed away several days after the transplant surgery, her father Mahesh Kumara claims that hospital authorities have yet to hand over her medical records to the family.

“This is a violation of our rights and therefore, I am preparing to file a plea with the Human Rights Council,” he said.

According to Mahesh Kumara, the hospital had failed to hand over the medical records at the time of releasing the body of Sachini Sewwandi to the family.

“The GMO asked for the reports to sign off and release the body,” he said adding, that, however, when I inquired, the hospital said it was still in the process of being compiled. I am yet to see those reports despite my daughter passing away on September 30,” he said.

The death of Sachini after the heart transplant has become controversial with her parents alleging he death was caused due to the negligence of certain hospital staff during the post-op period leading Minister of Health Rajitha Senaratne to order a full investigation into the incident which is currently ongoing.

Hospital authorities were not reachable for comment.
