Sampanthan meets UN Special Rapporteur

22 October, 2017

Leader of the Opposition and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), R. Sampanthan urged United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence, Pablo De Greif, to ensure that the voluntary commitments made by the government to the people of Sri Lanka and to the international community

are implemented fully, a media release issued by the TNA said.

It said, De Greif assured his commitment on the matter and the UN’s involvement in achieving a lasting solution to the national question.

The release said Sampanthan urged the above at a meeting between the parties in Colombo, yesterday, highlighting the issues faced by the Tamil people, with regard to the release of lands belonging to civilians, missing persons and political prisoners. Speaking of the missing persons Sampanthan said, “if a mother handed over her son to armed forces or a police officer, and wanted to know what happened to him later, it is a legitimate demand. Therefore, these demands cannot be ignored.”

On the delay in operationalizing the Office of the Missing Persons, he pointed out the importance of having branches of this office established in the Northern and the Eastern provinces as well.
