Galle Fort, in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built in 1585 by the Portuguese. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument. The Fort has a colourful history and today it has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. Some famous monuments such as the Light House, the Clock Tower, the Dutch Reformed Church and the Buddhist Temple, Anglican Church, the Meera Mosque, National Maritime Museum and the Old Dutch Hospital are found inside the Fort. The Sri Lankan government is trying to make the Fort a modern wonder of the world. The heritage value of the Fort has been recognised by UNESCO and the site has been named as a cultural heritage.
