Airmen and women karatekas win ‘Kukkiwon Cup’

The Korean-Sri Lanka Friendship Association which celebrated its 40th anniversary. As part of it’s celebrations the Korean embassy in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tae Kwondo Association conducted a Tae Kwondo Championship for the Kukkiwon Trophy at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium recently.

The theme of the championship was to raise the standard of Tae Kwondo in Sri Lanka. This championship was held for the third consecutive year. The Kukkiwon Cup was donated by the Korean Ambassador in Sri Lanka His Excellency Sam Changi. The Kukkiwon Cup Championship was won by Sri Lanka Air Force while the Sri Lanka Navy took the runner up trophy.

Over 1500 Karatekas competed in 37 events and were categorized under six age groups.

The former Korean Ambassador for Sri Lanka who was awarded the Tae Kwondo Black Belt by the World Tae Kwondo Association was handed over to him at the awards ceremony at the same venue. The Awards ceremony was attended by a large gathering inclusive of High ranking officers from the Education Ministry and Sports Ministry. President of the Sri Lanka Tae Kwondo Association and chairman of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council too was present on the occasion.
