EPRLF to contest LG polls under new alliance

10 December, 2017

Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF), led by former parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran, will run for the upcoming local government election, under a new alliance; Tamil National Liberation Front (TNLF).

EPRLF, which was a TNA breakaway party has formed its own separate alliance to run for the upcoming local government polls in the North and East, and will contest all local government, Municipal Councils and Urban Councils in the North and East on the ‘Rising Sun’ symbol of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF).

One of the TNLF constituents led by veteran and a moderate Tamil political leader V. Anandasangaree and founded by Tamils’ iconic father figure S.J.V.Chelvanayagam.

Meanwhile, Democratic Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (DITAK), a new party formed by dissidents of TNA’s main constituent Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK), rehabilitated LTTE units (ex-combatants) and civil society groups will be the other constituents of the TNLF, Suresh Prmachanadran told the Sunday Observer.

A MoU has already been signed among all constituents of the TNLF and the politbureau of the party, that represents all party constituents, will take all important decisions in the run-up to the polls, Premachandran said adding that a party constitution will be formulated soon.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of the Northern PC C.V.Wigneswaran has been quoted as citing examples of the past and saying that the breakaway may be due to ideological or selfish reasons but it is not unlikely that the breakaway parties will rejoin with the TNA before too long.
