Over 900 kg cocaine haul to be destroyed

A haul of over 900 Kilograms of Cocaine seized by the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) will be publicly destroyed tomorrow under the supervision of the Colombo Chief Magistrate. President Maithripala Sirisena will also be in attendance to observe the process where the seized drugs will be liquefied and destroyed.

The event will take place at the premises of the INSEE Ecocycle organization located at the Board of Investments in Katunayake. “The liquified drugs will be incinerated thereafter at a facility in Puttalam” Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Meanwhile Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayake earlier this month said that measures would be taken to formulate the legal provisions necessary to publicly destroy the consignments of narcotics seized during raids.

According to the police records, the PNB has seized 220kg and 650g of cocaine worth over Rs. 4.4 million during 2017, while 29 arrests have been made in connection to these cases.
