Woman Fide Master Suneetha Wijesuriya awarded the SLT SILK Award for Outstanding Dedication and Contribution to Promote Sports at the SLT Silk Sports Awards 2017, Suneetha won the Women's National Chess Championship ten times from period 1980 to 1997.
She won a Gold Medal at the 30th World Chess Olympiad at Manila, Philippine in 1992.
In the year 2017 she celebrated her anniversary of winning her medal and was glad to receive this Award. She has brought glory to the country due to her dedication and tireless promotional work rendered for the sport throughout the country.
Suneetha has conducted 490 chess coaching camps islandwide in schools, institutes, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Mercantile sector.
SLT Silk Sports Awards 2017 - Sri Lanka's First Annual Sports Awards is awarded for Excellence in Sports and Contribution towards its promotion. The annual SLT Silk Sports Awards 2017 organised by SPORTSINFO, Sri Lanka's premier sports promotion network and sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom was held at the BMICH recently.
Minister of Sports, Dayasiri Jayasekara was the chief guest while Hon. Minister of Petroleum Resources Development, former 1996 World Cup winning captain, Arjuna Ranatunga and Prof. Carlo Fonseka participated as the guests of honor.
This glittering event is organized for the third consecutive year with the objective of appreciating those who contributed to sports in the past years and the greats of the game and those unsung heroes behind the scenes are the main target of the event.
