‘Asian Challenge Cup’ Volleyball Tourney comes to Colombo

Sri Lanka wins the bid to hold the ‘Asian Challenge Cup Tournament’ here. This id the first time that Sri Lanka has got the opportunity conduct this Asian Championship on our local soil. At the meeting held in Bangkok to bid for the hosting of the tournament there were three bidders namely

Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka however Sri Lanka won the bid to hold the event. This is one of the victories our local Volleyball Governing body has achieved after a long lapse.

Holding of the tournament here is also a great opportunity for our National Sport to gain popularity among the Sports lovers of Sri Lanka.

It will also help to promote the sport on large scale as most of the schools are taking the sport very seriously with many tournaments are conducted at School level.

The Tournament is to be held from September 15 to 22 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium with participation of ten Asian Countries.

The countries already confirmed their participation are Malaysia, Fiji, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Iraq and the hosts Sri Lanka. After winning the bid Sri Lanka Volleyball federation has commenced preparations to field strong out fit to play in this tournament with hope of winning the Asian Title.

As its preparations the Sri Lankan pollist are undergoing residential training under newly appointed Serbian Coach said the Secretary of the Volleyball Federation Nalaka Shanthasiri.
