A web site mainly for the benefit of sports fans was launched in Colombo on Thursday by the Minister of Sports Dayasiri Jayasekera at the Duncan White auditorium of the Sports Ministry. The Web site was introduced to by two enterprising sports journalists Sanjaya Dissanayake and Seevalee Ediriweera with the support of sports journalists attached to various media organizations.

The website named as www.hooraylanka.com can now be viewed by all interested sport lovers locally and internationally.

The producers of the website intend to serve all sport lovers of the country in every sport. Sanjaya addressing the attendees said that their aim is to supply the public with the latest news on sport minus any favouritism. It will not only have sports news but also educate the general public on other matters connected with sports, he said.

“I and my colleagues will take all efforts to serve the public and keep them updated with all sporting activities taking place throughout the country irrespective of age. Specially sporting activities in school will be updated with the aim of encouraging the young ones to be involved

in sport according to their choice. We hope this will not only benefit them in sport but also help them to gain more knowledge on other sports too”, said Sanjaya. Leading lawyer Prathiba Mahanamahewa addressing the gathering stated that the motive of these two journalists would be of great value to sports lovers of all categories.

He further said that introducing a website is one of the difficult tasks at the beginning due to financial constraints.

“The print media is able to raise funds for their upkeep through advertising but the people working on websites are not able to get that advantage”, he said. Making a proposal to the Minister of Sports who was in atendance he noted that even government organizations turn a blind eye on this matter when requested for advertising.

He wanted the Minister to take note of the matter and help these valuable projects by making arrangements to grant advertising materials for them through which they can continue to serve the sporting fraternity. Minister Dayasiri who was the chief guest on the occasion stated that a website mainly for sports is one that fans are waiting for and the introduction of a website by these two journalists is highly commendable. He further added that the proposal brought to him by the learned lawyer Mahanamahewa has to be considered as a matter that needs to be taken seriously.

He also stated that something that needed by the public has come to light and every one interested should support the invention to continue its good work for the benefit of sports in Sri Lanka and wished all success.
