Army’s Abeykoon clocks fastest at Asian Games trials

Army sprinter Yupun Abeykoon produced a best timing of 10.57 seconds to win the 100m at the Asian Games trials held at the Sugathathdasa Stadium yesterday.

KSL Wickramasinghe (10.69) and HSS Kumara (10.75) also from the Army were placed second and third.

Ushan Thiwanka who cleared a new height of 2.20m in the Junior trials upgraded his performances again and cleared 2.24m which was the second best high jump in history behind Manjula Wjeyasekara (2.27m) and overcoming Nalin Perera’s (2.21m) while WPAK Pathirana from the Air force (2.15) and Tharindu Dasun (2.05) took second and third places.

In the men’s long jump Janaka Prasad Wimalasiri also produced a best performance as he jumped 8.10m and won the event with GKDS Piyaratne second with 7.65m and Amila Jayasiri third recording 7.63m.

Sprinter Lakshika Suganthi won the women’s 100m clocking 12.11 seconds while SL Vidanaduruge (12.15) and Shermila Jansz (12.19) took second and third places.

Upamalika Ratnakumari who clocked her personnel best in the first trial with 53.31 in the 400m event could do 53.83 seconds to win the event while PGN Madushika (55.53) and Tharaka Divyanjali (55.68) took and second and third places.

The trials are to select athletes for the forthcoming Asian Games in Indonesia in August this year.
