Ex-Trinitians regroup

13 May, 2018

Trinity College’s past rugby players (1968 and 1969) hosted a reunion over here in Kandy on May 4 the day before the second leg of the 74th Bradby.

They came together along with their wives and belong to a top-shelf group of players some of whom represented Sri Lanka.

“This gathering was an important one”, said historian Iswan Omar. The former players came from far and wide, representing a range of eras and had the opportunity to meet up with old friends and share their experiences.

The 1968 captain Ajth Abeyratne said is was “fantastic to see so many former players”.

The 1969 captain Shafie Jainudeen is no more.

In 1968 Ajith Abeyratne’s team had an unbeaten run until the Bradby where they lost the first leg 19-0 and the second leg 5-3. However the following year (1969) Trinity led by Shafie Jainudeen regained the Bradby by winning the first leg 8-0 and the return leg 9-3. Some of the others present were Palitha Sam Samarasekara, Iswan Omar, Sunil Wickremasinghe, Alex Lazarus, Mohan Samarakoon, Nihal Marambe, Rafi Ismail, Rohan Tennekoon, Shanthi Kumar, NTB Dassanayake, John Furlong and Gamini Bupitiya.
