No sports only bars
Over here in the hills, there are some clubs that exist only on paper contributing little or nothing to the betterment of spots; they only have a bar, rooms and the hall.
At one time cue games like billiards and snooker were at its best. Today these sports have nosedived and folks in Kandy are planning to bring this pathetic state of affairs to the attention of the new sports minister Faizer Mushtapha.
Ronny rugby consultant
Ronny Ibrahim who learnt his rugby at Kingswood College and became a coach has been invited as the consultant for his old school Kingswood and St. Anthony’s College for the second round of the inter school League season.
Kingswood qualified to play in the Cup segment while the Antonians fell into the Plate tournament.
Cricket AGM
The Kandy District Cricket Association has planned to have its AGM on May 21 at the Asgiriya KDCA office. All KDCA members have been invited to attend but only eligible members will be entitled to vote or take part in any of the proceedings.
Kandy DCA has a memorable history as they organized the first Test match out of Colombo at the Asgiriya stadium and a World Cup game in 1996.
Where is volleyball in Kandy?
Volleyball is supposed to be the national sport of Sri Lanka. It was popular in Kandy but today sadly the much needed support for the game is missing. The first volleyball League was formed in Kandy in 1941. At one time there were tournaments annually. Today it is not so and volleyball in Kandy is crying out for help. The game was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1916 by RW Camack.
Vidyartha in the Plate
Vidyartha College after hosting DS Sennayake College at Nittawela, will host Maliyadeva on May 26 and Lumbini on June 3 at the same venue. The date and venue of their match against Science College is yet to be finalized. Vidyartha did well in the first round and are expected to continue the good work in the second round in the Plate competition of the schools rugby League. A big hand should go to their coach Sumedha Malewana and his deputy Danushka Pushpakuamra.
Dilum makes Kandy proud
An old boy of Vidyartha College, 21 year old Dilum Deeshana, a top rugby player made Kandy, his school and parents proud by refereeing the Cup final of the Midnight 10 Rugby Tournament held in Singapore. Dilum played for Vidyartha in 2016.
Mahaweli Reach tennis
The seventh Mahaweli Reach Hotel junior tennis championship was held recently in which Malith Senanayake and Nipuna Nuwan produced a good display. Nipuna was able to win the under-15 and 17 Singles while Malith won the under-19 Singles and Doubles. A big hand should go to the Managing Director of the Mahaweli Reach Hotel Jayantha Panabokke for giving his fullest support to make this tournament a success.
PT Rajan hockey results
The annual PT Rajan schools hockey Sixes took place over here in Kandy at the PT Rajan playground Mahiyawa. On the last day of the tournament Mayor Kesara Senanayake was the chief guest while the late PT Rajan’s family members too were present.

New Rugby Academy
The Hill Capital Conditioning and Rugby Academy will get off to a start from today (Sunday) at the Trinity College junior ground at Hill Street. The chief of the academy is none other than Kumar Dias Desinghe who played for Trinity College, CH and FC, OTSC, Kandy SC, Central Province Combined team and Sri Lanka Development squad.
In coaching he was involved with the Navy team and Trinity’s under-16, 18 and second XV teams. He will be assisted by 2009 St. Anthony’s College vice-captain USM Arshan who also played for Kandy SC and Sri Lanka under-20. He is a diploma holder in Sports Science.
