Badminton election to be held soon

20 May, 2018

The Sri Lanka Badminton Association’s annual general meeting and election of office bearers is to held very soon according to the Director General of the Sports Ministry Buwanaka Herath.

Earlier the Sri Lanka Badminton Association was banned by the International Federation of Badminton (IBF) twice. Another ban will mean Sri Lankan players unable to contest international meets.

“I like to work with the newly appointed Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha. He is a very practical man and always likes to promote sports. He already has directed the conducting of the election of the Hockey Federation”, said Herath.

Sri Lanka Badminton is presently run by an Interim Committee headed by former shuttler Nishantha Jayasinghe. However former Director General of Sports Saman Bandara and Rohan de Silva resigned from the Interim Committee and no one included for the vacated posts. Meanwhile president of the National Badminton Interim Committee Nishantha Jayasinghe said the performances of players at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games were very high compared to previous occasions.

“Our best men’s doubles pair of Buwanaka Gunathilaka and Sachin Dias reached the semi finals of the group event and finished in fourth place. We missed the bronze medal due an unexpected error method. Normally in other sports like boxing and table tennis all the semi finalists receive medals.

That means the loosing semi finalists should be entitled to the bronze medal”, said Jayasinghe.
