How can rugby referees sport a clean image?

27 May, 2018

No matter how and to what extent rugby referees in Sri Lanka may try to defend themselves or win the hearts of the sport’s followers, there remains skepticism of their conduct.

The latest test for the referees comes in the form of St. Peter’s College protesting at the appointment of Akil Jamaldeen to referee their upcoming match against St. Joseph’s College.

The grouse is that Jamaldeen is a product of Royal College, a school which is also in the running for the league title like the Peterites.

Defeat for the Peterites against the Joes could mean Royal having more breathing space.

That’s not all. The Joes are also in the running and Akil Jamaldeen is the son of Nizam Jamaldeen who coached St. Joseph’s College when one of the players was Harin Fernando who is now a Minister and a key backer of Joes rugby.

Nizam Jamaldeen is also the head of the Referees Society.
