Sri Lanka Cricket wants retired judge to probe probes

27 May, 2018

Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed a retired judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Rohini Marasinghe to conduct an “independent inquiry” into the allegations of match fixing against Panadura Cricket Club and Kalutara Physical Culture Club and her primary task will be to “evaluate the reports of the inquiries”.

It means Justice Marasinghe will have to study the reports of the inquiries conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket and that of the Sports Ministry into match-fixing involving the two clubs. She will also have to conduct a separate inquiry in the match-fixing saga and make a final judgment besides detailing recommendations for action against anyone found guilty.

Sri Lanka conducted its inquiry through Asela Rekawa attorney-at-law while the Sports Ministry probed the match-fixing case with Palitha Kumarasingha PC heading the panel.

Justice Marasinghe was a sitting judge on the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and has served as a judge of the Court of Appeal.

She graduated in law in 1976 and joined the Attorney General’s Department as a State Counsel in 1980 and served as a district judge, before being appointed as a High Court Judge.

She obtained her Master’s Degree from the University of Hartford in the USA.
