Kandyan Heritage Ministry to document historic places

The Ministry of Science, Technology, Research, Skills Development and Kandyan Heritage has taken steps to produce short TV documentaries on historic places of archaeological value in the hill country. Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama has directed his officials to start work on this project.

A Ministry official said, as a preservation for posterity of such historic places that symbolize the heart and soul of national culture, which is fast receding from the minds of the people, it is a contemporary challenge.

The Minister has said: “It is essential to produce instructive short TV documentaries regarding them.

It is necessary to preserve and renovate all historic places in the hill country, covered by his Ministerial mandate relating to the protection of the Kandyan Heritage, while safeguarding their archaeological value.

In the first instance, 10 sites will be chosen under the documentary program, including, Gadaladeniya, Lankathilaka, Hindagala, Bambaragala, Medawala, Welivita, Welagama, and Hanguranketha”.

The Minister also directed that short documentaries be produced under the theme of the 1818 Rebellion, with the assistance of eminent film makers in the calibre of Sumithra Peries.
