Attack on coach Martis: Bail for assailant

17 June, 2018

Former Royal College rugby winger of the 1992 team Bharana Ranasinghe, who assaulted St. Peter’s College coach Sanath Martis, has been released on surety bail and ordered to appear at the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s court on September 3.

Ranasinghe assaulted Martis moments after Royal beat St. Peter’s to clinch the inter-school League rugby title at the Royal Complex ground in Colombo on June 9.

The match was played to a packed stadium and two close witnesses have been cited, one an assistant coach of the Peterite team and the other a Royal player who protested the attack on Martis.

Martis also coached the Royal College team to become champions last year. Several old boys of Royal are said to have called Martis and conveyed their opposition to the attack. Officer in Charge of the Cinnamon Gardens police Chief Inspector Samantilleke is handling the case.
