Trinity-Kingwood a blockbustre

Today rugby enthusiasts in Kandy will get the opportunity of witnessing two home teams in action when Trinity College meet Kingswood College in the President’s trophy schools rugby quarter final.

The match is expected to be an enthralling contest with both teams on an equal footing. Kingswood though will be able to take heart from the fact that they won the traditional contest which happened in the concluded League and may be tipped as the better team. But Trinity have also regrouped and go out with confidence which makes today’s game unpredictable.

Central Province men and women chess champs

The men’s and women’s teams of the Central Province did well to win the chess event at the 44th National Sports Festival. Dhanushka Bandara and Janandani Abeysinghe of the Central Province were adjudged as men’s and women’s players of the tournament.

The men’s team was made out of players like C. Lakshan Jayaweera, Dual Edirisinghe, Lahiru Hapuarachchi, M.R. Akthar, Isuru Alahakoon, Dhanushka Bandra, and Yasas Lamawansa. The women’s team had players like Janandani Abeysinghe, Shalini Ranasinghe, Janani Nanayakara, W.F.M. Premanath Dinukshi, Dilshani Ranasinghe, Saumy Zainab and Thilini Koswatte.

KDCA start with Sixes

The newly elected Kandy District Cricket Association (KDCA) committee is all-out to undertake an initiative to make cricket ‘a sport of choice’.

At the first meeting the executive committee was appointed with people like Senarath Jayasundara, Amith Wanigasekara, Pulasthi Amarasinghe, M.H. Marikar, Jehan Sirimanne, Chinthaka Giriyagama, Mahesh Weerasinghe, Palitha Thilakasiri, Mohamed Jazeer, Laith Chandrasena and Richard Elvitigala.

With the newly elected president it was decided to play a Sixes tournament and 16 clubs are expected to take part. There will be no entry fee and ground fees will be pocketed out by the KDCA. In the good old days KDCA had a six a side tournament for J.C. Block Memorial Shield. They also had a double wicket tournament for a trophy in memory of Dr. C.D.L. Fernando and their limited overs tournament was played for the George Hemachandra trophy and few years back there was an inter club tournament for the Tennekoon trophy. They are all out to bring back the tournaments.

When is the Weerasinghe trophy match?

Rugby lovers are keen to know when will the Kingswood-Dharmaraja match take place for the William Weerasinghe trophy. In last year’s game the Rajans emerged winners with a 53-32 points win.

This trophy was introduced in 2011 in appreciation of the services rendered by William Weerasinghe to the Rajans at that time the newly formed Rugby Football Association of the Old Rajans decided to play this match. He started with Kandy RFC, where he was the team manager for several years and after the amalgamation with Kandy SC he gave off his best for this club as the team manager, committee member and vice president.

He did his best for Rajans rugby too. He was also involved in football, hockey and body building. During his heydays he was a top class body builder and muscle dance.

Sunil trophy football

Last Sunday a Sevens football tournament was organized in memory of one of the top footballers Kandy produced, Sunil Samarasinghe, in which 16 teams were seen in action at the Edmund Silva ground, Deyanawella. Young Wanders SC emerged as the Champions while an Army unit team called the Blacks took second place.

Old Trinitians Scrummage AGM On Saturday June 23 the Old Trinitians’ Rugby Scrummage will host their Annual General Meeting at the Orient Club.

The Old Trinitians’ Rugby Scrummage is an organization affiliated to the Old Boys Association of Trinity College and manages rugby across all age groups at the school under the guidance of the principal
