Explore Negombo’s hidden secret!

I had an overnight stay at the Lagoon sunset view suite at Amagi Aria located bordering the Negombo lagoon. It is a magnificent four star hotel with lovely architecture and a stunning landscape. They won ‘The Most Improved Hotel Partner 2018’ at the recently held ‘Expedia Partner Event’ in Colombo.

Amagi Aria is built with the intention of providing an opportunity for guests to move into the lagoon and to experience new styles of recreation. The hotel is set within easy reach of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and Colombo expressway, and it is just 15 minutes to BIA and 10 minutes to the Colombo expressway and to Negombo city.

Amagi Aria is obviously Negombo’s hidden secret. The rooms are luxurious and the hotel boasts of 20 standard rooms, 44 deluxe rooms and four suites. There are two Lagoon sunset view suites and two Negombo city view suites. The suites come equipped with amenities such as a specialty espresso machine, single estate tea, multi device charging unit, Wi-Fi, complimentary premium water, a unique feature was the specially designed ‘pillow menu’ enabling guests to choose the pillow of their choice, large flat screen TV, dual mood lighting systems, his and hers bathrobes and a jacuzzi for one to comfortably relax in. The suite occupants also have the opportunity to taste the best tea and coffee in the country as Amagi Aria has partnered with Ceccato Colombo (Illy Coffee) and P. M. David Silva and Sons.

Breakfast is served at the Catamaran which can accommodate 55 guests inside and 45 outside. It is an all day dining restaurant with a multi-cuisine menu and alcoholic beverages as well. It had options ranging from Continental, Indian and Sri Lankan to English Platters and a huge variety of deserts and fresh fruit juices. I opted for the Sri Lankan food as I love spices. I enjoyed string hoppers with a spicy fish curry, dhal curry, manioc, omelets and pol sambol. The pol sambol was amazing and delicious as the shredded coconut had the right amount of chilli powder, lime juice, red onions and salt. Believe me; every bite was like a miracle come true. Everything was fresh and well-seasoned.

Between breakfast and lunch, Amagi Aria had a range of activities available for us to indulge in. I took a boat ride which was a marvelous experience. From mangroves, lagoon fish and crabs to birds and lagoon reptiles; there was so much to explore and enjoy. There is a range of aquatic adventures designed to offer the best of water sports in Sri Lanka. The protected lagoon waters provide a fantastic area for water-based activities, and there was plenty of choices to keep all ages happy.

One could hop aboard a jet ski, feel the thrill on a speed boat or wake board, surf your heart out on a banana boat or tube or take a relaxed boat ride; the choices are simply endless and are guaranteed to keep your adrenaline pumping and the fun overflowing. The spa treatment at the hotel was really an escape into a world of bliss. I selected to do a full body Balinese Massage which was a traditional Asian massage using palm pressure and long gentle strokes while applying a unique blend of natural, essential oils. This combination really does help stimulate blood circulation, improves energy flow and drains tensions away.

Amagi Aria is capable of serving some solid, high-quality food for very reasonable prices considering the standard of ingredients they obviously use. They have special lunch buffets on weekends which are worth the money you pay and the service is excellent. I had the opportunity to taste their high tea in the evening which was extraordinary. It includes a three-tier service comprising delectable finger sandwiches, decadent petite pastries, and scrumptious sweet items and, of course, bespoke blended teas and pairing to perfect the experience.

The menu offers guests delicious seasonal savoury and sweet items ranging from Date and Cinnamon Scones, Peanut Palmers, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Duo Colour Cheese Cake, Cheese Stuffed Red Velvet Cake, Coconut and Prune Tart, Butter Scotch Whipped Cream, Open Egg and Ham Sandwich, Sunflower Seed Bread with Chicken Ham and Cheese, Plain Croissant with Chicken Ham and Tomato, Lettuce and Chicken Wrap, Mini Triple Decker Sandwich, Prawns and Wrap Chinese Roll. Curated by certified Tea Masters from P.M. D. Silva and Sons, guests can choose from a range of spectacular Ceylon teas, each depicting expert pairing with sweet and savoury items especially created to complement the teas.

Dinner was served at Moya, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant offering an exquisite selection of fresh, local seafood masterfully prepared with seasonal flavours. Floor to ceiling windows in the restaurant ensure expansive panoramic views of the lagoon, the Indian Ocean and the surrounding locale. Moya is not just a seafood restaurant, it is a seafood experience. Overall Amagi Aria is a customer-friendly hotel and I walked away from the hotel having discovered high-quality food well worth its price. Excellent service and amicability from the PR and Marketing Executive, four-star comfort levels and excellent water sports and spa experiences are the hallmarks of Amagi Aria.
