Dissolution of Parliament : UNP to challenge President’s decision

11 November, 2018

The United National Party (UNP) will file a petition in the Supreme Court tomorrow against President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to dissolve Parliament, party sources said.

UNP General Secretary Kabir Hashim said the party will seek legal redress regarding the decision.

Hashim told a media conference yesterday that the party lawyers were already making preparations and added that the party is however prepared for elections at any time.

“As a party that upholds democracy the UNP is prepared for an election at anytime,” Hashim said. However, according to him the party will voice its dissent against calling elections at an earlier date. “We refuse to be forced out,” he said.

Hashim also said the party will also meet the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and seek his advice on the matter.

The Party is expected to form a broad coalition if forced to contest the upcoming General Elections to be held in early January.
