TNA’s pro-UNF stance, detrimental to Tamils- Douglas Devananda

2 December, 2018

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) came under fire from EPDP leader and Minister of Resettlement, Rehabilitation, Northern Development and Hindu Religious Affairs Douglas Devananda for its current pro-UNF stance which is unfair by the Tamils of the North and the East.

The TNA, by supporting the UNF government during its three-and a half-year administration, achieved nothing for the Tamils and its consistency on the same stand now is detrimental to the Tamils, same as their stance during the reign of the LTTE, he said.

He told a media conference in Colombo on Friday that the politics of the current administration under President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa are transparent and focused on the welfare of the Tamils who suffered immensely during the LTTE regime, he said. Within one month of assuming office, his Ministry has been able to get 10 Cabinet papers passed for the welfare of the North-East people and got them implemented, he said. Housing projects for displaced people of the two provinces are to be started and approval has been given for the construction of the initial stage 10,000 houses next month, he said.

The process of paying compensation to people affected in the conflict has commenced and a Northern Province Development Authority is to be set up shortly, he said adding that several job-oriented programs are to be implemented to offer jobs to youth of the two provinces, he said.
