Bad weather warning for East coast

16 December, 2018

The Department of Meteorology has advised the fisher and naval communities on the East coast to refrain from venturing out to sea today due to a cyclonic storm in the deep sea between Pottuvil - Batticaloa and the Trincomalee - Kankesanthurai sea areas. They called upon any fishing or naval vessels already in the areas to head either towards land or safer waters.

A deep depression was prevalent yesterday over the Southeast Bay of Bengal approximately 470 km East - North East of Trincomalee. t Meteorologists forecast that the system is likely to move North -- North Westwards while intensifying further into a cyclonic storm.

Several showers or thundershowers in the Northern, Eastern and North Central provinces are expected but fair weather can be expected elsewhere in the island. A spokesman for the department said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea area, off the coast extending from Potuvil to Kankesanthurai and Trincomalee. Heavy showers can be expected in the Eastern deep sea areas.

Strong gusty winds and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers a spokesman for the department said, adding that fairly cold weather can also be expected over the island during the weekend.
