16 December, 2018

Sri Lanka has reported a 2.8 per cent growth in October 2018, compared to October last year, according to the recently released Index of Industrial Production (IIP) by the Department of Census and Statistics.

Beverage production has been the main contributor to the growth recording 107.8 in the IPP from 84.7 in October, 2017.

Apart from beverages, food products, textiles, apparel, leather products, petroleum products, rubber and plastic products, non-metallic mineral products and fabricated mineral products are other star performers in the IPP.

However, tobacco products, electric equipment, paper and wood products, furniture production, manufacture of metals, pharmaceutical products, machinery equipment and chemical products have declined in the IPP in contrast to the previous year.

Making short-term changes in the volume of industrial production from the manufacturing sector of the country is the main purpose of the IPP.
