Treasure hunters aged between 19 and 75, arrested

Twenty five suspects were arrested for illegal treasure hunting in Valaichchenai, Elpitiya and Ethimale areas during the last two days.

During a raid conducted by the Valaichchena police, 15 people were arrested while illegally excavating for treasure in the Pulipanchikal Forest Reserve.

The suspects were aged between 19 and 75 years of age, and were residents of Kegalle, Seeduwa, Matale and Bakamuna. Police also took into custody a scanner, lorry, three-wheeler, two bicycles, equipment used for excavation, and religious objects.

In a separate incident, eight people were arrested over a similar incident in Ethimale. The suspects were aged between 28 and 46 years of age and hailed from areas including Ethimale, Udawalawa and Monaragala.

In Elpitiya, two men aged 30 and 44, from the area, were arrested while digging for treasures in the Kottagala forest reserve. The arrest was made with the help of residents and the area’s Grama Niladari.
