Laugfs Gas will infuse one billion rupees to expand its LPG transshipment terminal at the Hambantota Port.

The commissioning of the terminal, a fully-owned subsidiary of Laugfs Holdings, will take place at the end of the month.

“We will infuse one billion rupees as part of the agreement. The construction work of the terminal has been completed and will be commissioned soon. The Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector is performing well and the rupee depreciation has supported the industry,” Laugfs Holdings Chairman W.K.H. Wegapitiya said.

LPG prices in the world market have come down and are likely to come down further. This will augur well for the local industry, he said.

“We plan to export excess production to Bangladesh and Myanmar and the country will earn foreign exchange,” he said.

“The Laugfs supermarket chain is expanding and competing with the other players. We will set up more supermarkets in the cities, mainly in the Western Province. However, with the response we receive, the chain will move to major cities in other areas,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s first solar-powered fuel station in Pepiliyana by Laugfs Southern Petroleum was recently awarded a Silver Rating Certification under the GreenSL Rating System for Built Environment at the Annual Green Building Awards 2018.

“Laugfs Petroleum designed this iconic solar rooftop to reduce our dependence on the national grid and minimise our environmental impact. The fuel station has been built adhering to international benchmarks and environmental practices. We are delighted to have been recognised for our efforts by the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL).

The fuel station will serve as a benchmark in the petroleum retailing industry not just in Sri Lanka, but in Asia as well,” he said.

The 25KW solar-panelled roof of the fuel station is expected to generate over 3,000 KWH per month, enabling it to reduce the fuel station’s dependency on non-renewable energy sources for electricity.

It will also contribute to the national grid with the excess energy generated.

Laugfs Gas PLC secured the Gold Award in the ‘Power and Energy Category’ for the sixth consecutive year at the 54th CA Annual Report Awards 2018.
