ComBank donates 19 Math Labs

10 February, 2019

Commercial Bank installed 19 Math Labs and funded over 15 Math Camps in schools around the country last year, benefitting over 2,000 students.

The Math Labs were set up in 17 schools and at the Sevana Special School and Child Care Centre in Kotte and the Peter Weerasekera Children’s Home in Yakkala.

Each lab was equipped with 70 math-related games to make learning more accessible, fun and relevant to students. A three-day residential Math Camp followed the installation of each lab.

The math camps were conducted by a team of nine resource persons, including the founder and developer of the Math Lab concept, H. A. Dharmasiri as Lead Teacher to create an affinity for the subject among students and to dispel the belief that maths is a difficult subject.

The team provided hands-on experience and demonstrations of the simple and enjoyable math games to teachers and students. Learning activities began early morning and went on until midnight at each camp.

Commercial Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer S. Renganathan said, “Mathematics is an essential subject for any student. Through this initiative, we have also reached several rural schools, providing them with an opportunity to learn the subject in a more practical manner. Our objective goes beyond just enabling students to pass an exam; we hope to present them with tools to solve problems and skills of logical reasoning that they will need throughout their lives.”

The Math Lab concept was launched in 2015 by Commercial Bank to develop mathematical and analytical skills of schoolchildren.
