The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) marks two decades of service, grooming thousands of professionals, creators and future leaders to the nation this year. In conjunction with the anniversary celebrations, SLIIT aims to kick-start an outreach campaign themed ‘Dare To’, in a bid to spread awareness on the success stories of SLIIT alumni who dared to change their lives from dreamers to achievers.
Founded in 1999 as a not-for–profit, non–state, private education institute, SLIIT has played a pivotal role in empowering the country’s workforce. Operating as an independent institute for two long decades, SLIIT has solely focused on elevating and enriching the lives of its students, and has helped them achieve their lifelong ambitions.
In a society where financial gains have become the prime concern across all platforms, SLIIT has clearly set itself apart from the rest by prioritising on students’ wellbeing and imparting up-to–date knowledge; paving the way to nurturing a new generation of ideators, innovators and disruptors. SLIIT has also leveraged its potentials for maximum efficiency, and continued to reinvest the profits year after year, in order to provide the best infrastructure, the service of highly qualified faculty, and the accreditation from globally acclaimed professional bodies and universities.
Starting out with 400 students at its Metro Campus in Colombo, today the institute accommodates over 8500 students, including both local and overseas. With its 6 branches island-wide, SLIIT is notably an institute which draws the highest number of private higher education students in the country. Upholding a commitment to provide holistic development for its students, SLIIT enables them to easily adapt and successfully overcome challenges posed in contemporary workplaces.
SLIIT offers a plethora of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with local and international accreditation. The institute takes pride in producing over 12,000 alumni, graduated through its three main faculties – Business, Computer and Engineering. Software Engineers, Civil Engineers, Business Analysts and prominent Entrepreneurs are among some of its outstanding alumni.
The students gain ample exposure to practical aspects through lab facilities and industry internships, in addition to classroom activities.
Just like any other university, SLIIT also offers a wide spectrum of extra-curricular activities to keep the students engaged, allowing them to discover hidden talents and explore new avenues.
As a UGC (University Grants Commission) and ministry of higher education approved institute, SLIIT is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the International Association of Universities.
Moreover, SLIIT is the first Sri Lankan institute to earn an accreditation from the prestigious Institution of Engineering & Technology, UK. One of the most notable facts that set SLIIT apart from the rest is that it operates as a not-for-profit institute. This is to ensure all profits are reinvested in the institute, paving the way to delivering high quality programmes and amenities for better education.
SLIIT also facilitates industry internship programmes through its affiliations with leading multinational and local organizations in Sri Lanka. The exposure and experience helps the students to foster innovative and analytical thinking, develop insightful understanding about the respective industry, augment professional personality, and grasp practical application and knowhow.
This is further proven by the graduate Tracer Studies conducted in 2016/2017, which clearly shows that nearly 90% of Bachelor’s degree graduates of SLIIT have successfully landed on full-time careers, within six months from graduation.
