Prof. Sujeewa Amarasena, a Senior Professor in Paediatrics, has been appointed as the seventh Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna.

He is the first Alumnus of the University of Ruhuna to become its Vice Chancellor. A peadiatrician by profession, he has specialised in newborn care at Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney, Australia.

He has held many academic and administrative posts such as Head of the Department of Paediatrics, Founder Dean, Faculty of Medicine, General Sir John Kotelawela Defence University, overseeing the development of this military medical school apart from being a professor for 16 years.

He has led many professional organisations as founder Secretary and President of the of the Perinatal Society of Sri Lanka and President of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians.

As an internationally recognised academic, he functions as an Adviser to the Regional Director of the WHO SEAR on newborn and maternal health and as a technical expert in many advisory and technical committees of the Ministry of Health. He is an old boy of Royal College, Colombo.
