In the wake of allegations over deputy leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, singer Madumadhawa Aravinda, on his involvement in the Minuwangoda clashes on May 13, a former member of the Minuwangoda Urban Council had made a statement to the police over the connection of the former to the incident, the Sunday Observer learns.

Former Urban Councillor Sumith Nihal Subasinghe alias Chamli had made a statement to the Crimes Division of the Peliyagoda police on Friday. “The Minuwangoda clashes began at around 5.45 pm. I was at the supermarket and saw Madumadhawa walking towards the town with a group of about 50 people from the Minuwangoda bridge end. He was wearing a white sarong and a white shirt. Soon after, people started flooding from the Negombo, Kurunegala and Veyangoda roads,” Chamli had said in the statement. Meanwhile, Madumadhawa has filed a Fundamental Rights petition to prevent his arrest.

“We have a reasonable doubt that the Minuwangoda mayor was behind this. Our people had asked for the water bowser of the Urban Council long before the fire spread. But he had not responded to the request of the public.

Finally, the police had to intervene and take out the water bowser,” said Chamli. “I started politics with Vijaya Kumaranatunge and Reggie Ranatunga. They never were racists. Therefore, I am not afraid to speak against racist activities,” he added.
