Masters in full swing

7 July, 2019

The Ceylon Masters Badminton Championship commenced yesterday at the Sugathadasa stadium with 157 men and 27 women in action competing in eight age categories from 35 year upwards along with five combined age groups.

Most of the yesteryear national Champions and some who have played other national tournaments contested yesterday’s matches. Former men’s and women’s national Champions showed that they have still not lost their touch and came up with good victories to enter the second round.

At the time of reporting the organizers were able to complete 180 matches played on a best-of-three sets format with a set finishing at 15 points.

Newly elected Sri Lanka Badminton Association president who is also the president of the Ceylon Masters Badminton Association Rohan de Silva playing with Niroshan Wijekoon in the Men’s Doubles event for Combined Age group 100-plus won their game in straight sets 15-8, 15-6 to make their way to round two.

The finals are scheduled to be played today at the same venue and the organizers expect to conclude the proceedings by 2.00 p.m. The awards ceremony is to take place at the Eighty Club from 6.00 pm.
