Gateway retains Trophy beating Thomians

Gateway College retained the Neville de Alwis/Ralph Alles Trophy for the second consecutive year beating S. Thomas’ College by one goal to nil in their football match at the Race Course ground yesterday under lights for the first time.

Gateway College got off to flying start with only four minutes into the game when skipper Areeb Niyas netted in the goal to take the most needed lead.

From then the Thomians made many inroads into Gateway territory with the aim of finding the equalizer but all their efforts were thwarted with the good work displayed by Gateway goal keeper Infas Iqbal.

At the half time Gateway led 1-0.

The second session saw the Thomians on the attack from the word go with second year coloursmen Senal Alwis and their skipper S. Ebenezer trying their best to get the equalizer.

The girls under-20 encounter between Gateway College and Overseas School Colombo too was an interesting one. Both teams displayed their talents playing good soccer to thrill all present. Gateway College had to taste defeat when Overseas School Colombo beat them by 4 goals to three on the tie breaker system as the game ended in a nil-all draw at full time.

Former Thomian and one of the senior members of the Thomian Sports Committee D.B. Jayasooriya was the Chief Guest and gave away the awards along with Chairman of Gateway Group Dr. Harsha Alles.
