UNP to decide on leader this month

13 September, 2020

The United National Party (UNP) will decide on who will assume the position of its leader this month, UNP member and former State Minister Palitha Range Bandara said.

He said several members have expressed their willingness to take up the position, and the party’s working committee is discussing the matter.

“Nothing concrete has been decided,” Bandara said.

He said that the party is not considering former minister Mangala Samaraweera for the leadership even though he has expressed his keenness to the media on Thursday. Samaraweera expressed his willingness to take up the leadership when he arrived at the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing the alleged incidents of political victimisation to give a statement.

Sources said that the party Working Committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow. Top positions of the party, including the deputy leader, treasurer and chairman will be filled on a temporary basis during the meeting. However, members are yet to receive an official letter in this regard.
