Govt’s response to UNHRC report on Wednesday

24 January, 2021

The government will present its response to the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Wednesday January, 27 Foreign Secretary Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage told the Sunday Observer yesterday. The report will be published along with the response as customary ahead of the upcoming sessions of the UN Human Rights Council late February.

The 46th session of the Human Rights Council will be held from February 22 to March 23. Sri Lanka has been placed on the agenda of the forthcoming sessions.

'The Foreign Secretary said Sri Lanka will present its stance on the human rights allegations made against the country during the final phase of the humanitarian operation in 2009 and the commitments it has fulfilled so far. It has already started lobbying friends and likeminded groups to support the country,' amid reports that the Core Group Canada, UK, Germany, Montenegro and Macedonia, was mooting another resolution on Sri Lanka. The government withdrew from UNHRC Resolution 30/1 and the subsequent rollover Resolutions in February 2020.

"The government has been asked to support this new Resolution but we are yet to take a decision on it," he said. The Foreign Ministry is awaiting the text of the new resolution by the Core group.
