The Chinese Year of the Ox

On February 12 this year,, a billion people living in China and several millions of Chinese living overseas celebrated the first day of their Chinese New Year, the ‘Year of the Ox’. This 15- day celebration marks the end of Winter. It is also called the Lunar Festival or the Spring Festival. The dates of the celebration are decided according to the Lunar Calendar and takes place at a time between late January and mid February each year.

The Chinese New Year is a tradition that goes back to over 3, 500 years . It is said that the tradition started after some Chinese people chased away a monster named ‘Nian’ with loud noises and red banners.
