Cricket club urges Minister to appoint Interim Committee

7 March, 2021

One of Sri Lanka Cricket’s stakeholders, Colts Cricket Club, has petitioned Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa to appoint an Interim Committee to run the affairs of the sport until the election of office bearers on May 20 saying the current administration had ended its two-year mandate in February 2021.

“It is manifestly evident that the office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket are elected to hold office for a period of two years and not more.

“Thereby the office bearers of Sri Lanka Cricket elected on February 21, 2019 expired on February 21, 2021 and are not legally entitled to hold office,” Colts president Nishantha Ranatunga has said in a letter to Minister Rajapaksa.

“We kindly urge you to exercise your discretion vested under section 32 of the Sports Law of 1973 and suspend the registration of Sri Lanka Cricket until the election is concluded in May, 2021 and under the powers vested under Section 33 of the Sports Law appoint an Interim Committee to carry out the duties and functions of Sri Lanka Cricket and thereby ensure the smooth and lawful functioning of Sri Lanka Cricket,” the latter further stated.
