The legend of Face book memes

7 March, 2021

Face book, as you know, is like an illusion making strangers the beloved and the beloved strangers. At present, Face book has become a main reason for making and solving problems in the world. In the social media platform, there is no doubt that you haven’t encountered a FB meme post without the silhouette drawing of a hearty smile. But no one knows that the legend of Face book meme is a Chinese basketball player named ‘Yao Ming’.

Born on September 12, 1980 in Shanghai, Yao Ming has distinguished himself as a basketball player with a well built figure and a height of seven feet and six inches (2.29 m) in height. During his career, Yao Ming had played for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Talented player

It did not take a long time for Yao Ming to shine as a talented player. After he was selected to start the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Games eight times, he had become the most distinguished player in the team mainly because of his talents and impeccable personality.

The origin of the Yao Ming’s Face book meme:

Being one of the basketball players, Yao Ming might never have thought to become the legend of Face book memes. This silhouette drawing of Yao Ming is believed to have been based on a photograph taken at a post-game press conference held after the 2009 National Basketball Association’s playoff. What has made Yao Ming laugh so hard was much more interesting. At the press conference an American basketball player by the name of Ron Artest had told one of the journalists that after winning the game someone from the crowd had offered him beer and that he would have drunk it only if there were no cameras around him. On hearing this story Yao-Ming burst out laughing hard. Eventually. his hearty laugh was captured by a cameraman.

The silhouette drawing based on his photograph was first created and submitted to Reddit by an artist identified as DOWNLOW on July 11, 2010. Unexpectedly, this picture had made a stir in the social media platform and attracted everyone.

Now, this meme is used to convey dismissive attitudes on the social media platform. To find out a Face book meme without Yao Ming’s comic laugh is difficult, nay impossible like finding ’kalu-nika’ as one of the local sayings goes.
