Covid-19 patients could hit one million - Snr. Health official

23 May, 2021

Over one million Covid-19 patients could be reported in the country in the next 100 days if the current trend continues, a senior most health official said yesterday.

The number of Covid-19 patients doubles every five days and if this happens for another 100 days, the number will double 20 times.

Then the number of Covid-19 patients in Sri Lanka would exceed one million, Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Hemantha Herath said.

Dr. Herath stressed the importance of strictly following all health guidelines issued by the Government and the Health Ministry to protect the people from Covid-19.

The few simple health guidelines are staying at home, wearing a standard mask, covering both, the nose and mouth whenever going out from home, keeping a distance of at least two metres from another person at all times, washing hands with soap and water for 30 seconds, using a standard hand sanitiser whenever soap and water is not available and avoid touching above the neck before cleaning hands.

Health experts also called upon people to avoid crowded places, closed places with tightly closed doors and windows, air-conditioned places, small rooms without open doors and windows.

If people need to visit such places for essential or urgent matters, they should leave that particular premises within 15 minutes, they added.
